NDIS Innovative Community Participation West & North Melbourne

What is NDIS Innovative Community Participation?

It is under the Core and Capacity Building section of your NDIS plan that social and community participation funding can be found:

CORE SUPPORTS:

Social and Community Participation Assistance:

This funding covers NDIS participants who need to achieve their goals through participation in community, social or recreational activities. These activities can be offered in a centre or a community setting. As part of supporting social participation, NDIS may provide funds for a support worker to help you with the following tasks:

Group activities

If the assistance provided allows an individual with disabilities to participate in the community, social, and/or recreational activities at a facility as part of a group activity, prices will depend on the staff: participant ratio. If the participant has challenging behaviour or high medical support needs that require additional support, higher intensity support is required for the individual.

Group support providers cannot charge for “non-face-to-face” services, including report writing, phone calls, emails, staff research and training, and so on. This is because the hourly price caps for these support services already include a grant for non-face-to-face services.

  • Attend personal development courses
  • Join a social group
  • Go on a field trip or vacation
  • Go to a camp vacation
  • Visit your local library
  • watch a movie or concert
  • Go to community events and/or
  • join a sports club

CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORTS

Increased Social and Community Participation

Social and Community Participation funds can be used to pay for art classes, tuition fees, sports coaching, and any activity that builds skills and independence as well as any activity that may have capacity-building components. These can also include assistance to establish volunteer arrangements in the community, individual skill development, peer support, mentoring etc. If the support activities are deemed essential and reasonable, NDIS funds will be allotted to enhance the participant’s goals.

What is the benefit of assistance with Social and community participation?

Support for social and community participation is part of the NDIS plan under Core Support. Involving and promoting community participation and inclusion has been found to have significant benefits for individuals with disabilities. However, it is important to note that if you are an NDIS participant and have been approved for the Support and Assistance category, here are the benefits you can enjoy:

  • Improvement in behaviour and attitudes of individuals with disabilities
  • Develops self-confidence and improves their personality
  • Could result in the reduction of support costs as this may reduce the long-term care and support required
  • Participants with minor disabilities can help reduce support costs

Some practical examples demonstrating benefits are:

  • When participants become savvy in using public transportation, they don’t require transports such as taxis. This reduces overall transport costs.
  • As they become more comfortable while interacting with others, participants gain freedom of movement. This decreases relying on other individuals for tasks such as purchasing groceries or for communication purposes.
  • The likelihood of accidents drastically reduces for individuals with moderate disabilities (e.g.:people with visual or hearing impairments).
  • As NDIS participants become more independent and are able to participate in the community, this increases the Australian economy.
  • It is an efficient way to break stereotypes while promoting economic growth and social interaction.
